Meta cuts Quest 2 and Pro prices – and makes Sony look bad

Sony's reputation suffers as a result of Meta lowering the pricing of Quest 2 and Pro.

Unexpectedly, Meta has announced that it would lower the cost of the 256GB Quest 2 VR headset and lower the cost of the Quest Pro.

This action makes Sony's choice to charge such a premium price for the PSVR 2 appear even more pronounced. By partly undoing a prior price rise, Meta hopes to maintain its existing hegemony in the VR industry.

The business has now brought the maximum storage choice back down to $429 after increasing the price of the Quest 2 256GB from $399 to $499 in 2022. Should you decide to wait to purchase, the adjustment will take effect on March 5.
We have requested confirmation from Meta, but we anticipate that the price reduction will be promptly reflected in the United Kingdom as well, bringing the price from £499 to £429 once again. The Quest 2 128GB continues to be sold at the inflated price of $299/£299, which is regrettable.

Even more significant is the reduction in pricing for the Meta Quest Pro edition, which has been brought down to $499 from its original asking price of $1,499. In both the United States and Canada, the price will increase to $999 on March 15. Again, we anticipate a decrease from the current price of 1,499 to 999.

The about-face comes with Meta vowing to make its virtual reality gadgets as affordably available as possible for everyone who is interested in trying them out. It also comes at a time when Sony is receiving criticism for the expense of the PSVR 2 headset, which can only be used in conjunction with a PS5 and costs $549 or £529 respectively.

In a post on their blog, Meta writes, "Our objective has always been to produce gear that is accessible for as many people as possible to take benefit of all that virtual reality has to offer." Because of this, we were the first company to develop standalone headsets with inside-out tracking, which enables users to enjoy the unrestricted mobility of wireless virtual reality without the need for a second computer or gaming console.

"While we will not be reducing the price of Meta Quest 2's 128GB SKU, we will be decreasing the price of 256GB of storage, which will allow even more people to enjoy the pleasure of completely immersive games and experiences. In a same vein, we are making our market-leading Meta Reality technology and Infinite Display optical stack accessible to even more companies and professionals all around the globe by reducing the price of Meta Quest Pro.
