Evinrude & Johnson Minlon Carburetors

I’m going to it the high spots about minlon carburetors with you today, mainly about the V6 & V4 engines.minlon carbs 4 Just in case you don’t know what minlon is, it is mineral reinforced nylon or as most people call it black plastic at least in the boat business. It is manufactured by Dupont.

You will find it used in carburetor parts, vapor separators etc., mostly parts that contain fuel. You know with ethanol in the mix these days you need something that can withstand that junk. Information about boats will show you the detriment of that dreaded corn.

First you need to remove the carburetors, remove the top ones first. Then you will need to take 2- 1/4X20 bolts for each side, to keep the throttle body held securely against the intake, they will go in the top two holes where the carburetor was mounted. Evinrude & Johnson offers a bolt for this, part # 314610, the 1/4X20 bolts will be just fine. Remove the remaining carburetors.

Earlier model engines had hoses attached to each carburetor, later model engines the fuel was introduced into each carburetor through the throttle body, what a wonderful thing that is! If you have an engine that the hoses attach to each carburetor, information about boats will tell you to PUSH the hoses off of the bibs don’t PULL.

Also if your engine is older, check the color of the intake manifold gaskets, if they are black replace them. The material in these gaskets cannot stand E10 fuel and will melt them and cause problems.

Disassemble the carburetors, remove side plate cover, float bowl, float, needle and seat and gaskets. You should also remove the calibration pocket gaskets on the throttle body so you can inspect the pocket for any trashminlon carbs 3 or contamination.

Unless the carburetors are super filthy you may not need to remove the jets, (high speed and the intermediate air-bleed orifice). If you don’t remove the jets make sure they are tight. Clean the carburetors with a suitable carburetor cleaner, Evinrude & Johnson offer a cleaner called “Carburetor and Choke Cleaner”. I use Purple Stuff in a container and let mine soak for a while, wash out with water and then blow dry, completely dry.

minlon carbs 2  Now you will reassemble the carburetors and ALWAYS use a new kit, I only use OEM parts. Reinstall the needle and seat and float, adjust the float to be parallel with the carburetor body. Install nozzle well gasket and float bowl gasket, set the float bowl on being careful not to disturb the setting of the float. Information about boats will tell you to drop the screws in the holes and turn counter-clockwise until you feel the screw drop into the root of the thread, don’t start another thread.

These are the torque values for reassembly and install:

Side Cover on Carburetor:                      24-30 in/lbs

Float Bowl                                             18-24 in/lbs

Calibration Pocket Cover                      10-15 in/lbs

Carburetor Flange                                  45-55 in/lbs

Check the little screens in the throttle body and reinstall the carburetors, bottom ones first remembering the bolts installed to hold the throttle body in place. I use a little Triple Guard Grease to help hold the carburetor flange gaskets, do not gob it on. Torque the bolts for each carburetor in a criss-cross pattern after all of the carburetors have been re-installed .
