The next macOS update can turn your screen into a ring light

The next macOS update adds Edge Light — turn your screen into a built-in ring light

Apple’s upcoming macOS Tahoe 26.2 beta introduces a subtle yet powerful feature designed to improve your video calls. Called Edge Light, it transforms your MacBook’s display into a virtual ring light that enhances your lighting during meetings or streaming sessions.

The feature works by illuminating a glowing rectangular band around the edges of your screen. Using Apple’s Neural Engine, the system automatically detects your face and adjusts the light’s position for optimal brightness. You can customize the tone — from warmer to cooler — and even enable automatic activation when your environment’s lighting dims.

Edge Light doesn’t interfere with your workflow. The top menu bar remains visible, and the light intelligently moves aside when your cursor hovers near it. This makes it ideal for users who multitask during video calls.

According to Apple, Edge Light will only be available on MacBooks with Apple Silicon (2024 and later). While it might not fully replace a professional ring light, it’s certainly a major convenience upgrade for remote workers and frequent video callers.
